A Tisket, a Tasket

A Tisket A Tasket, Make A Basket

Baskets were used from the beginning of time. They were made using all types of materials, Birch Bark, Sweet Grass, Pine Needles, and the most common used today comes from the Rattan, which can be found in the rain forest areas from South China to Australia and Fiji to West Africa and Madagascar. Basket reed is produced from the core of this thorny palm which grows like a vine into the forest canopy.

There are many other materials used in Basket Making. I choose to use reed. It is economical and easy to use. Taking a Basket Class you will learn the basic weaving, how to identify the wrong side of the reed, how to end a row when weaving individual rows, shaping and reshaping, truing a base and how to dye your basket. Check in your local area for Basket Weaving classes.

There is nothing like the satisfaction of owning a beautiful handmade basket. They brighten any room, are useful around any home and make cherished heirloom gifts. This is one of my favorite Baskets, the Heart-Shaped Elbow Basket. It is one of the easiest baskets to make. The pattern is available as well as the Kit through my web site, www.mostlybaskets.com.

Let’s make a basket! Happy Weaving
