Rags to Rugs...

Let me share with you our "Rags to Riches" story!

Lora and I are two friends from the Midwest. We have many common interests!
However, little doubt our favorite shared interest - making rag rugs - has grown
from part-time business three years ago, to now…… a full-time venture!

This common love of creating with fabric allowed us an opportunity to take
otherwise meaningless fabric and turn it into a meaningful treasure from the heart. Hence, the name "Rags to Rugs".

About Me…..(Sally)

First….I am going to tell you a little about myself! I have been married to my handsome husband for 35 yrs & we have 4 beautiful daughters that we are very proud of….ages 16-28. We live in a cabin on a lake in southern Nebraska where we spend much of our time boating, fishing and swimming. The best part about my job is I can easily take it with me wherever I go..…. many a rug has been made out on our pontoon! (I often ask a customer if they can still smell the suntan lotion in their rug?) I am very health conscious eating healthy most of the time. (Find below my favorite healthy recipe) I also make time to walk 6-8 miles every day by the lake….no exceptions!! My favorite thing to do is go to thrift/rummage shopping. Some of my most prized possessions were acquired at the Goodwill! I also love to read & garden when I have the time.

How we achieved our success……

Many things contribute to our success in Rags to Rugs. Starting with….. our love for adventure and the need to be challenged. We both began by taking our product to local craft fairs. I smile when I remember my very first one. My daughters and I had worked very hard to make 55 rugs to take & sale. I was very nervous on how it would go after all the work we had done. To say it was an overwhelming success was an understatement! By 1:30 that afternoon, I was sold out and ready to head home. Now that was a lot of fun!

It was soon after that, that Lora and I took the next step towards our success! We contacted Debbie at “Moon & Stars” to create a website for us. We often hear from our customers how much they really love the simplicity of our website. One of our features we are most proud of is our “Show & Share” page. On this page we show photos shared by our customers of rugs in their “new home”. We also offer a monthly drawing for a free rug to those who take the time to send us a photo & let us know how much they love their new rug!

It didn’t take us long to realize that having a website did not mean automatic sales. What we were missing was advertizing. So…. we looked around for the best fit for our product and decided that “Country Sampler Magazine” was the one for us. It is a great magazine and has contributed much to our success. I was very excited this last spring to have one of my rugs be one of 20 items selected and highlighted in the “Tour of Homes” issue.

We also have a newsletter we send out once a month to over 2500 of our faithful customers. In the newsletter we announce the winners of our free drawings and we also share what is new at “Rags to Rugs”.

Each of our uniquely crafted rugs are completely made by hand. To many this seems like an impossible task and hard to believe. It’s true… I myself have made over 3000 rugs in the past 3 years. A lot of our time is spent preparing the fabrics. With many of our rugs we begin by dying the fabric to achieve just the right look. Once the fabric is prepared we have to cut & connect the fabric strips. Then comes the fun part…. creating a beautiful rug.

Much of our business is attributed to custom orders. We are always happy and excited when our customers test our creativity! We do consider each, a piece of artwork - much like an artist views his finished work of art. The difference is we are "painting with fabric".

We invite you to visit our website, we are confident you will be glad you did!

Baskets by Emily...

Hello! My name is Emily Sommers, and I would like to WELCOME you to my little corner of baskets!

I am happy to give you a 'peak' into the fun we have here, and if you are at all a basket lover, I'm sure you will enjoy yourself. All the baskets are handwoven by myself, using rattan reed. They are woven with no glue, nails or staples ( with the exception of some of the bought handles), which makes them a strong, flexible basket. I have a selection of colors that I dye myself to weave into the baskets, and also make my own stain, using pecan shells, to give them an 'antiqued' look.  They are made to use!

The baskets can be found around my area in several shops.

I also do different local shows and demonstrations, and do lots of teaching.  I enjoy every aspect of it, and especially meeting other people who appreciate the art of basket weaving.

Thank-you for your interest, and please let me know if I can help you out in any way!

BLESSINGS to you! -Emily-
